On November 9th, a virtual community meeting will be held regarding a zoning change request from Chicago’s popular Metric Coffee, the company co-founded by Xavier Alexander and Darko Arandjelovic in 2012. Block Club Chicago reports Metric Coffee has requested a zoning change from B3-1 to C1-1, clearing the site at 3110-12 N. Kedzie Avenue for commercial use. Should the zoning change be approved, Metric plans to open a “coffee roastery and café with retail food sales with indoor/outdoor dining.”
In addition to the rezoning quest, “Metric Coffee is also seeking a packaged goods license to sell craft beer,” reads the Zoning Change Request submitted to Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa’s 35th Ward Office. This request would require the Kedzie moratorium be lifted from Belmont to Wellington.
3110-12 Kedzie Avenue is a 12,000 square foot warehouse currently home to Olde Chicago Antiques. Block Club Chicago shares the current owners, a husband-and-wife team, have plans to move to Wisconsin where they will open another antiques store.
Metric Coffee officially launched as a wholesaler and online retailer in March 2013. In the intervening years, the company has developed in to a roastery (2016) and café in West Fulton Market at 2021 W Fulton St. in Chicago’s Kinzie Corridor.
Alexander and Arandjelovic did not respond to requests for comment on Metric Coffee’s ideal opening timeline, should the zoning change go through.
While we all await news of the project’s future, you should head on over to Metric Coffee’s website and social media to learn more.
