It is the end of one chapter for Jonathan Macedo, but potentially the beginning of another soon.
The team at Peke’s Pozole recently announced their Pilsen location at 1144 18th Street is closing this Sunday. The restaurant has been open since February serving Mexican dishes, and Macedo wanted to close it to focus on their space in Archer Heights. However, from Block Club Chicago the owner plans on opening a new space on the South Side, which hasn’t been officially announced.
Peke’s Pozole in Archer Heights first opened in 2018 at 4710 S Pulaski Road. At the time, Macedo was working with his mother Petra to open the restaurant. As he became older, he decided to take over the business and eventually opened Itz-Chel.
The concept has an extensive food menu, including breakfast, appetizers, pozole, or a Mexican stew, tacos and tortas. Their pozoles are popular, hence the name, with ingredients like chili powder, cabbage and tostadas. Many go to the Pulaski location for their margaritas with salted rims.
Itz-chel was a more upscale version of Peke’s with salads, steaks and braised chicken accompanied by cocktails. It is believed he will stick to more of a casual feel for the new Peke’s location.
What Now Chicago has reached out to Macedo and is awaiting comment. More information on Peke’s can be found on their Instagram @pekes_pozole.
