The team behind BAAR BAAR, NY’s popular Indian Gastro Pub that offers a “modern interpretation of regional Indian Cuisine,” will open a restaurant right here in our own River North. The eatery is slated to open at 217 W. Huron, in the space that last housed Bar Lupo/Oak & Char.

Although the team has declined to comment on just what Chicagoans can expect from the restaurant once it opens, Managing Partner of BAAR BAAR Payal Sharma did confirm the acquisition of the space writing, “It will be affiliated with BAAR BAAR team but it’s a new concept.”

The property is a 5,730 square-foot “turnkey” restaurant space on the main floor of a 6-story heavy-timber loft building with 100 residential condos and 28,000 square-feet of commercial spaces on the first floor and lower level.

BAAR BAAR is in part the vision of Chef Sujan Sarkar who, prior to the New York endeavor, opened ROOH in San Francisco. “Championing progressive cooking deeply rooted in tradition, Chef Sujan was an early adopter of the farm to table movement and his experiments with decade-old recipes have led to the birth of ambitious projects like Ek Bar — India’s first Artisanal Cocktail Concept,” shares the restaurant’s website, which also notes BAAR BAAR is New York’s first modern Indian gastro bar.

We will have to wait a while longer before the team is ready to share just what is coming to Chicagoland. All we can say right now is, we’re pretty darn excited.
