Following a devastating fire, the owners of Tom & Jerry’s of Sycamore is coming back at a new storefront.
From their social media, the restaurant has now found a new location at 265 W Peace Road in the city. The owners are also working to rebuild their restaurant that was severely damaged at 1670 DeKalb Avenue. Their new spot could open as early as this March.
The fire took place a week ago which was started by an electrical issue in the dining room’s ceiling. They describe the building as “deemed a total loss.” Since then, the team has been crafting plans to rebuild the space for the community. They also just signed the lease for 265 W Peace Road.
“We’re so grateful that no one was injured, no one was on premises,” general manager Sarah Meyer told What Now Chicago. The fire occurred at 3:30 a.m., and by that afternoon the owners had already chosen the new location.
Tom & Jerry’s has been a name in DeKalb County since 1972, and is known as the “King of the gyros.” All gyro options are served on warm pita bread with onions, tomatoes and of course tzatziki. Along with the gyros, the restaurant has served ribs and chicken, burgers, subs and salads.
Their new address is the former Eggsclusive Cafe, near the intersection of N Main Street. It will share the plaza with a Little Caesars Pizza location, and is near other chains like McDonald’s and Casey’s. The location is being called a temporary home for the business.
The new menu will be smaller as the owners are scaling back while working on getting the restaurant back up and running. Most of their popular items will be served. The new location will also have a drive-thru.
While this is a stressful time for the business, Meyer and the owners are assuring the team that the building is just a temporary home, and the restaurant is still standing strong. Tom & Jerry’s will be updating the Sycamore community on the reopening date, as well as opening date for their temporary location, on their Facebook page.
