Trader Joe’s on Voss Road is due for an uplift. According to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation permit, the Trader Joe’s at 1440 S. Voss Road in the Memorial/Woodlake area is currently undergoing renovations.
The permit lays out a $2.7 million construction project that’s already underway. Construction on the 15,256 square foot grocery store is slated to be completed by October. At this time, the store is not closed, and we don’t suspect it will. But if the Voss Road Trader Joe’s closes for a brief period of time for construction, if all goes well with construction and permitting, it should reopen this fall.
The Memorial/Woodlake area Trader Joe’s is expected to get new refrigeration, freezer cases, a new crew restroom, a new bridge, more freezers, and new checkstands.
At the helm of the construction project is the Director of Construction at Trader Joe’s, Geoff Hawley, who was also listed on the permit. What Now Houston reached out to Hawley to find out more about the renovations and if the store will be closing at any point, but did not hear back by the time of this publication.
Trader Joe’s was founded in 1967 by Joe Coulombe in Pasadena, California. The grocery outlet brand evolved from a local convenience store chain dubbed Pronto Market into a beloved national specialty grocer known for its quirky nautical theme, private-label products, and affordable, high-quality food. It was acquired by the Albrecht family in 1979 but continues to operate independently.
There are now more than 600 Trader Joe’s locations across the United States. The specialty grocery chain operates in 42 states and the District of Columbia, with California holding the highest concentration of stores. Texas has a little more than 20 locations, with fewer than ten in the Greater Houston region.
The Voss Road location opened nearly a decade ago, so renovations were likely in order. The store has continued to grow in popularity with locals and visitors who come to the area.
Trader Joe’s at 1440 S. Voss Road in the Memorial/Woodlake is anticipated to wrap up renovations by this fall.
