An Australian-inspired coffee and pie shop is making its way to Jacksonville as The Kookaburra prepares to open in the Southbank neighborhood.

The new shop will be located at 1200 Riverplace Blvd., occupying first-floor retail space in the Hanania building. The Jacksonville Business Journal recently reported on the upcoming location, which will bring The Kookaburra’s coffee, Australian meat pies and baked goods to the area.

For The Kookaburra, the Jacksonville location marks another step in the growth of a concept that began in St. Augustine in 2012. The company opened its original shop in Cathedral Place before expanding to additional locations throughout Northeast Florida. Its current footprint includes several St. Augustine shops, a location in Nocatee and a shop in Alachua, along with outposts at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Ponte Vedra Concert Hall.

The Kookaburra describes itself as an Aussie-American espresso bar and pie shop, with a focus on ethically sourced coffee and products roasted by the company. Its coffee program includes single-origin offerings, espresso drinks, pour-overs and Australian-style iced coffee.

The menu also gives the Jacksonville location a distinct food offering. The Kookaburra makes its Aussie pies and pastries from scratch in its kitchens, with savory options including traditional meat pies, Thai chicken chili, vegetable coconut curry and breakfast pies filled with combinations of eggs, cheese, bacon and sausage.

Coffee selections range from classic lattes, flat whites and cappuccinos to house specialties such as the Honey Badger Latte, made with honey, cinnamon and vanilla, along with the Hot Aussie Latte and P.C. Latte.

The company has grown from its original St. Augustine café into a broader coffee operation that also roasts its own beans. Its website highlights a selection of single-origin coffees as well as blends available in its shops and online.

An opening date for the new location has not yet been announced.
