A prominent New York City deli is making a comeback, and its infamous giant pickle is returning, too.
Carnegie Deli will reopen at 834 7th Ave. in Midtown Manhattan, just a block north of its original location.
“The sign is up. The secret is out. Carnegie Deli is coming soon to Midtown Manhattan,” the deli shared on social media.
The announcement generated plenty of buzz, with many flooding the comment section with personal anecdotes about their visits to the deli and memories passed down from previous generations.
Carnegie Deli opened in 1937 and rose to fame in the 1970s under co-owners Milton Parker and Leo Steiner. Today, Parker’s granddaughter, Sarri Harper, runs the deli alongside her mother, Marian Harper.
The deli has long played a role in New York’s entertainment scene, appearing in Woody Allen’s “Broadway Danny Rose,” with scenes at the deli opening and closing the film.
The deli also drew entertainment figures over the years, including comedians Robin Williams and Adam Sandler, musicians Stevie Wonder and Taylor Swift, director Steven Spielberg, actor Alec Baldwin and late-night host Conan O’Brien.
Many remember Sandler’s “Hanukkah Song” from “Saturday Night Live,” but Carnegie Deli also gets a shoutout in the song: “Everybody gets together at the Carnegie Deli.”
Carnegie Deli is known for its over-the-top corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, along with black-and-white cookies, cheesecake and its giant pickle, which hung in the window and became a favorite photo spot for celebrities.
“All of a sudden, it was gone. We couldn’t believe it. Usually, people come to rob the place, but they came to take the pickle,” Marian said in a recent Instagram video.
She goes on to tell the story of how a fraternity at New York University had a scavenger hunt one night, and on the list was taking the Carnegie Deli pickle. They succeeded. Eventually, the pickle was returned, and it’ll soon be showcased again.
