Sunset Lounge Bottoms Up (Brix) is unmistakable. The massive building that sits situated on East PCH catches the eye effortlessly, almost hypnotizing onlookers with its warm and dreamy paint job.
However, despite its outward allure, the restaurant has had its fair share of ups and downs. The subject of a 2015 episode of Bar Rescue, Rick Reich’s Huntington Beach Brix was described by Spike TV as “withering on the vine” while the “eccentric” Reich was reportedly “too busy being the life of the party to notice.”
While many subjects of the show went on to find success, a 2015 OC Register article claims that dozens of restaurants eventually closed after appearing on Bar Rescue. And while Brix remained in business for eight years following its episode’s release, unfortunately, the restaurant-bar will soon bolster the statistic as a new venue moves into the famed space: Ocaso Lounge.
What Now Orange County spoke with Daniel Hitzke, a partner at Ocaso Lounge and Long Beach bars Dempsey’s and Boomers, about what we can expect from the incoming outpost:
WNOC: Can you tell us a little bit more about Ocaso Lounge?
DH: We’ll be focusing on a more upscale approach with decor that reflects our Surf City heritage and a vibe that caters to our locals yet is inviting to all visitors.
WNOC: What about the menu?
DH: Our mixologist has created an amazing cocktail menu with specialty tequilas and mezcals. We’re also working with Chef Uly on completing an amazing [food] menu full of strong traditional Hispanic flavors that will push the envelope and showcase amazing new takes on seafood.
WNOC: Do you have an opening date?
DH: We’re keeping that under wraps for now, but we’ll soon do a public poll regarding whether or not we should repaint the historic building.
