Founded by five friends in 1972 in Winter Park, the Black Sheep has been a favorite spot for crafters for decades. The store has changed hands a number of times over the years—passing most recently from Anne Jones to Cynthia Brumback and Leigh Ann Horton—and as the brand has faced several relocations, construction on its new home at 1500 Edgewater Drive has begun, according to coverage by The Bungalower.
Until recently, the Black Sheep was located at 1322 N Mills Avenue, and it’s currently located in a temporary home at 6817 N Orange Blossom Trail in Lockhart, selling “canvases, fibers, accessories, and supplies while hosting regular workshops for stitchers of all experience levels.”
“We are so grateful to have the opportunity to create the next chapter for The Black Sheep. It’s an honor to continue the legacy of the amazing women who came before us and preserve it for future stitchers,” says the Black Sheep website. The site tells the story of previous owner Anne Jones’s retirement in 2025:
“Cynthia Brumback and Leigh Ann Horton, lifelong customers of the Black Sheep, were called to purchase the Black Sheep and carry it forward in its next chapter. Both Cynthia and Leigh Ann call the Black Sheep their first LNS [local needlepoint shop], learning how to stitch at the shop and beginning their life-long passion for needlepoint there.”
No opening date has been announced yet for the store at 1500 Edgewater Drive.
