Restauranteur and chef Brett Naylor and his partner Nicole Barrick, who is also his wife, are finally opening Wilder, a 150-seat restaurant in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square, in November. The couple originally planned to open in early 2020 but was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Naylor and Barrick completely overhauled the three-story, 4,500 sq. ft. square space at 2009-2011 Sansom St., a historical building that previously housed the Philadelphia Academy of Social Dance.
Their renovation combines the structure’s original carriage house and townhome. Guests at Wilder will be able to grab a bite or cocktail at the bar or sit down to dinner in the first or second-floor dining rooms. The pizza kitchen and crudo and raw seafood bar, which diners can watch in action, will draw customers into exploring the lower-level space. Secluded private parties will take place on the third floor.
Naylor, who served as an executive chef at Oyster House and former partner in Mission Taqueria, is bringing his longtime buddy Bob Truitt on as Wilder’s executive chef. Truitt, a Food & Wine “Best New Chef” who worked in renowned kitchens like El Bulli and Corton, is planning a seasonal menu for Wilder with peak season produce, fresh handmade pasta, and hearty main dishes.
Wilder will combine both traditional and contemporary designs with murals adorning the walls and ceilings by local artist Barrick. The restaurant’s name evokes its’ free-flowing layout and pays homage to the menu’s fresh ingredients. Wilder promises to be a work of art. Follow them @wilderphilly for updates.
