The incoming Waffle House will be located within the Elizabeth Plaza at 1450 Pulaski Hwy Newark, DE 19702, according to the plaza’s listing agent, Rich Dudek. Project plans estimate construction will be completed in October 2022.
What Now Philly reached out to Waffle House’s real estate representative, Sanford McAllister for further details, but did not receive an immediate response. However, Dudek told What Now Philly that he and Patterson-Woods Commerical — the real estate services company at which Dudek is a partner — are “excited for Waffle House to join the plaza.”
Waffle House was started in 1955 by neighbors Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner. One day, the two Georgia residents decided to open a round-the-clock, sit-down restaurant that would cater to both patrons and employees alike. Equipped with their celebrated yellow sign, the duo began expanding their operation all over Georgia. “Today, the Waffle House system is more than 1,900 locations in 25 states.”
In 1973, Joe Rogers Sr. appointed Joe Rogers Jr. as CEO. In 2012, the position was handed over to Walt Ehmer. In 2017, Joe Rogers Sr. passed away.
While Waffle House’s menu seems self-explanatory, it’s actually much more expansive than most expect. For instance, in addition to an array of waffles, the establishment offers burgers, bowls, melts, pies, and fries.
