A new spot for authentic Ethiopian cuisine is opening less than an hour south of Portland.
Gursha Eats is the newest restaurant coming to Salem at 2138 Lancaster Drive NE. Owner Azigza Hussan is starting the restaurant with his wife who is a chef. He wanted to open a location that gives Salem residents an option for Ethiopian cuisine that he felt was lacking.
“I saw the demand from the community,” Hussan said.
Hussan is planning on opening his business on the Fourth of July weekend. He travels back and forth to Portland to look for fresh ingredients for the restaurant. Right now, he is working on getting the inventory set up, as well as putting the finishing touches on the interior design.
Some of their menu items are plant based, including the veggie combo with red lentils, yellow split peas, cabbage and string beans. There is also shiro, a smooth chickpea stew with onion, garlic and spices, with a side salad. The restaurant still serves entrees with meat such as lamb and beef stew.
Gursha also set up an Indiegogo campaign to help launch the restaurant. They are at over $3,000 in donations as of now, and there are six days left in the campaign.
“Gursha is a family run, culture-rich dining experience serving injera, tradition and hospitality,” says the description on their Indiegogo website.
