A local Ethiopian restaurant appears to be cooking up a new location.

Gebeta Ethiopian Bar & Restaurant is planned for 1452 NE Alberta Street, according to a liquor license application with the City of Portland. The space was formerly occupied by Fuel Cafe, a now-closed brunch restaurant.

According to the application, operating hours for the restaurant would be 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Gebeta Ethiopian Bar & Restaurant is currently located in the Cully neighborhood at 7620 NE Killingsworth Street. The restaurant currently has an average star rating of 4.9 on Google Reviews, with visitors singing the praises of the authentic flavor-packed dishes and friendly service. Many call it the best Ethiopian restaurant in Portland. It’s not yet clear if the business is relocating, or if the Alberta Street restaurant will be an additional location.

Fuel Cafe announced its closure at the space in September 2024, citing increased costs and a decline in business.

The space is located at the corner of NE Alberta Street and NE 14th Place, next to Zig Zag Vintage.
