According to a recent article from the Portland Eater, Tanaka Katsu will be opening a new location in the Alta Civic Station at 1699 NW Civic Dr.

A representative of Tanaka Katsu did not immediately respond to What Now Portland’s request for comment.

While an official opening date has yet to be confirmed, Portland Eater’s article states they will be opening sometime in the winter. Beyond its signature sandwiches, Tanaka delights in offering an array of delectable Japanese pastries, including tantalizing treats such as yuzu cake rolls, matcha opera cakes, and Shiro miso croissants – the perfect complement to their coffee drinks crafted from a bespoke blend by the Good Coffee Roasters.

The imminent launch of Tanaka’s Tigard branch on August 18 is generating buzz, marking the west side expansion as part of a remarkable $35 million transformation at Bridgeport Village. Originating from a brilliant culinary concept, Tanaka’s inaugural Portland location emerged in the summer of 2022 under the guidance of the team behind the esteemed Afuri. Its sibling establishment, Kushikatsu Tanaka, has been a gastronomic icon since its inception in Tokyo back in 2008, according to Portland Eater’s article.

Stemming from the 70-year-old Tanaka family katsu sauce recipe, this flavorful elixir has been instrumental in elevating Kushikatsu Tanaka to a position of honor, ranking among the top 5 restaurants in all of Japan. While kushikatsu isn’t on Tanaka’s menu, the commitment to tradition, quality, and an exceptional dining experience resonates powerfully, drawing inspiration from the remarkable success of its Japanese sibling.

At Tanaka, a synthesis of Japanese comfort cuisine, artisanal baking, and, of course, the acclaimed katsu sauce, define their culinary ethos. A belief in the unifying power of simple ingredients – flour, water, yeast, and salt – underscores their creations. From luscious milk bread to exquisite Japanese pastries and a diverse range of katsu offerings, the aspiration is to craft dishes reminiscent of home, nurturing a connection that reaches deeply into the heart, according to the company website.
