City Cafe & Tap Room has new ownership at 667 Plumas St. in Yuba City, with Alfonso Villagomez confirming the change to What Now Sacramento after taking over the restaurant’s liquor license. Villagomez said the core City Cafe menu isn’t going anywhere, but he’s building out a 22-tap self-serve taproom in a connected space next door, complete with a pool table, darts and its own pub-style menu and price point.
Villagomez described the shift as additive rather than a reinvention. “I don’t plan on changing the core base of City Cafe. I just have a growth plan,” he said, pointing to catering, delivery and the new taproom as the main areas he’s expanding. He’s planning both office catering and off-site liquor catering, along with weekly programming like Wednesday pub trivia to pull in new regulars.
The restaurant will stay open throughout the transition, with its usual seasonal menu changes continuing on the cafe side while taproom offerings roll out gradually. Villagomez also pointed to amenities he feels haven’t gotten enough attention under the previous ownership, including one of downtown Yuba City’s larger patios and an on-site parking lot, a rarity for the area.
“If you love what City Cafe has been doing, the core menu is going to really hold true to what the concept has been, but expect some new fun things coming out of the taproom and catering,” Villagomez told What Now.
