A West Oakland-based barbecue joint is expanding to Elk Grove.

Horn Barbecue founder and pitmaster Matt Horn is bringing his signature slow-smoked meats to the former Slow & Low Smokehouse space at 9700 Railroad St. He’s partnering with local restaurateur Michael Hargis, who operated Slow & Low before its closure in January, as well as LōwBrau Bierhalle, Holy Spirits, and the now-shuttered Beast + Bounty.

The duo announced the expansion on Instagram, with Horn emphasizing the deeper mission behind the venture. “This partnership was built on faith—faith in the craft, in the community, and in each other,” he said. “Elk Grove deserves more than great barbecue. It deserves a gathering place that fosters connection and belonging. Together, Michael and I are creating that destination.”

The original Oakland location has earned impressive accolades including a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard Award nomination, alongside recognition in Forbes, The New York Times, and Esquire.

But Horn Barbecue’s Elk Grove eatery will offer more than just award-winning smoked meats. The space will feature a full bar, live music, and guest appearances from renowned pitmasters and chefs.

The restaurant was originally expected to open in February 2025, but that timeline has now shifted. Though Hargis briefly confirmed the news with What Now Sacramento, he did not provide an opening date.
