Pangaea Bier Cafe, the longtime Curtis Park beer hall and burger spot that lost its lease earlier this year, is set to reopen in spring 2027 at The Diggs, 1800 Third St, a new Heller Pacific development across from the CalPERS building at 3rd and R Streets in downtown Sacramento. Owner Rob Archie confirmed the move in a social media post, describing the new space as an emotional but exciting choice for the concept’s next chapter.
The Diggs sits in the former Thomson Diggs Hardware building, now being converted into 140 loft style residences alongside what the project describes as “arts-forward commercial space designed for makers, coffee mornings, and cocktail evenings.” Pangaea’s new footprint will be considerably larger than its original Curtis Park home, with a 4,000 square foot indoor space and nearly 7,000 square feet of patio, giving Archie far more room for the community gathering feel Pangaea built its name on.
The reopening also marks a shift beyond Pangaea’s roots as a tap house. The new space will include the capacity to brew its own beer on site, with Archie describing plans for small “passion projects” and collaborations with some of his favorite breweries around the country, all under Pangaea’s own distinct branding, separate from sister brand Urban Roots. On the food side, corporate chef Greg Desmangles said the menu will keep the burger as its anchor while expanding into housemade sausages, steaks and more substantial dinner options.
Archie opened the original Pangaea in 2008 before partnering with Peter Hoey to launch Urban Roots Brewing & Smokehouse, which has since grown into a small Sacramento hospitality empire including BAWK!, The Roost, Cerveceria at the Shack and Good Neighbor in Ice Blocks.
