North Port is set to see an increase in grocery store options in the coming year. Last month, What Now reported on Detwiler’s Farm Market’s plans to open its eighth location there, at I-75 & Sumter Blvd, and now word is out that Publix also has its sights set on a new store in Wellen Park.
The planned Publix would anchor a new shopping center at the intersection of West Village Parkway and Manasota Beach Road, said a post shared on Facebook by North Port News and Traffic Report, “near the new Wellen Park High School. The planned completion date is set for late 2027. There will be 10 additional units for lease connected to the Publix, each at 1,400 sq ft.”
“We will need it in a few years,” said one commenter on the post. “When Wellen Park is built out, the one in downtown will not be able to handle the traffic. It is overcrowded already when the snow birds are here.”
A household name throughout the southeastern states, Publix is having a busy few years in Florida, where there are planned locations in the works in locales like Palm Bay, Horizon West, and beyond.
“We’ve come a long way since 1930,” says the Publix website’s About Publix page. “Throughout our history, our associates and customers have helped Publix grow from a single store into the largest employee-owned company in the United States. We thank them by remaining deeply dedicated to customer service and community involvement, and being a great place to work. We’ve earned numerous awards for these efforts.”
