Achilles Coffee Owner Chad Bell looked at a space off Highway 101 several years ago but didn’t pull the trigger.
“The timing wasn’t right for us,” he explained.
Now three years later, the space has been leased to the growing San Diego coffee company.
“I like to surf, I love Solana Beach and we wanted to take Achilles further up the coast,” Bell explained. “We’re opening a location downtown this summer, that will give us four downtown, so I felt it was time to start looking elsewhere.”
He said that he loves North County and he felt the location was the perfect opportunity for Achilles.
“As soon as it became available we moved on it,” Bell said.
Bell started Achilles coffee as a cart in The Gaslamp Quarter in 2015.
“I had just moved from San Francisco and I was used to having coffee on every corner,” he explained.
After a year with the cart he leased a small space in Cortez Hill and was eventually able to expand to next door.
Now with locations on Ash Street, B Street and 100 Park Plz., the specialty coffee roaster continues to source all of its coffee from the equatorial region around the globe.
Bell said the new location will be similar to the B Street one in that it will have an outdoor patio and a full menu.
He plans to open the Highway 101 location later in the summer in either August or September and may look for further expansion but not just yet.
“We’re opening two new units by the fall,” Bell added. “We want to get those open and see what next year looks like.”
In the Beach Walk Shopping Center off Highway 101, Achilles will be minutes from the beach.
