Australia-based yogurt shop Yomie’s Rice x Yogurt is opening another Bay Area location — this time, in San Francisco. Yinlee Wu, who owns the new spot at 2620 Ocean Avenue in Lakeside, says she hopes to open the yogurt shop by the end of June 2021.

Yomie’s (a portmanteau of “Yo” and “Homie”) specializes in purple rice yogurts and drinks, and has been a participant in the growing purple rice yogurt trend in Australia (similar to the US fro-yo and bubble tea crazes).

If you don’t know what purple rice yogurt is, fear not. The US hasn’t quite adopted the craze the way the Australians have — yet. Purple rice is a sweet, chewy rice originating from Asia, high in protein, fiber, and antioxidants. To make the yogurt drink, the rice is steamed then blended with fresh yogurt, resulting in a drink that resembles milkshake.

In case you’re wondering — yes, purple rice yogurt is delicious. And yes, you should go try one. Yomie’s already has locations in Millbrae and San Leandro, but if you’re new to the stuff and don’t want to stray outside of San Francisco, head to the new Yomie’s this summer for your first taste (we recommend their purple rice and red bean yogurt).
