The Atlanta Department of City Planning seeks ideas for creative bike parking structures, including amenities such as bike racks, interpretative art, and bike repair stations. Applicants may choose to submit from three award types and be judged through a competitive application process.
Applications are open to community organizations, including neighborhood associations, advocacy groups, and business associations and must be submitted online by December 31, 2021. Based on the scoring criteria, conditional awards will be given to the top projects, who then need to gather additional neighborhood support to move forward with the project. Once the final awards are announced, the City will pair each recipient with an artist to develop and implement custom art for each award location.
According to the City’s website, the three types of bike parking structures include:
- Bike Corral – Bike corrals are the conversation of one on-street parking space into a bike parking structure. City of Atlanta corridors with existing on-street parking are eligible for this type of award.
- Sidewalk-level Bike Parking – Sidewalk parking will use the sidewalk or furniture zone for creative bike parking. Sidewalks must be at least 8.5 feet to be considered.
- Open Space Bike Parking – Open space parking ideas include a destination within the City-owned public park. However, private properties or open spaces owned by other public agencies are not eligible destinations.
The scoring criteria for the projects include:
- Equity Priority Areas (areas of low to moderate-income)
- Destination (local commercial districts, Main Street districts, Friends of Park’s organization affiliation to City parks).
- Bike Facilities (adjacent to existing bike lanes or trails).
According to the City’s website, the Bike Parking Structure contest is part of the Love Our Places initiative to re-imagine Atlanta’s public spaces through small, low cost but high impact projects throughout the City. Past projects have included art-filled crosswalks and parking spaces redesigned into on-street dining options.
