Friends of Friends Planning New Community Hub in National City

Teams Behind Public Square Coffee and OpenGym Collaborate on 8th Street

Music, coffee, burgers, and more are promised in a new project brewing in National City. Eater reports Friends of Friends will debut in a 4,500-square-foot space on 8th Street featuring coffee by the folks who brought us Public Square Coffee in La Mesa and a food concept by OpenGym.

Friends of Friends is in progress just steps from Market on 8th food hall and is located across the street from the recently completed Parco development of coliving apartments and ground-floor restaurants and retail. 

The cafe is said to feature drinks that bring together Mexican, South American, and Filipino flavors. The space is designed to go beyond AM cafe service and will additionally serve local beer and food by OpenGym’s concept Wavy.

Formerly operating as a pop-up, Wavy will serve breakfast sandwiches, elevated burgers, and vegan burger options.

Friends of Friends will also feature a music program and DJ setup, as well as an on-site roastery. Their roasting unit is to be shared with other locals committed to building their own unique coffee-roasting businesses, with educational and community resources to be offered in the space. 

An opening announcement for Friends of Friends has yet to be made but reports share the site will open in late 2022. Be the first to hear about updates by following Friends of Friends on Instagram
