After a Michelin-recognized restaurant closed its doors earlier this year in Kensington, a new restaurant called Trattoria Da Sofia is set to take its place, located at 4055 Adams Ave.

The 3,554-square-foot Italian concept will move into the former home of Cucina Sorella after it closed down this summer after seven years of business, according to SanDiegoVille. Tracy Borkum’s Urban Kitchen Group rebranded the Kensington Grill after it sat there for over two decades. Now, the restaurant space will be transformed into a simple, casual design infused with traditional Italian trattoria influences. Trattoria Da Sofia is expected to open in January 2024.

This is the latest concept from a group of restaurateurs from San Diego, Sicily, and Mexico City, including Mariano Liga, John Rudolf, Andrea Carbonaro, Giancarlo Guttilla, Giuseppe Lo Coco, Sofia Lo Cascio, Sebastian Berho, and Franco Mestre. Together, the group will create a beautiful restaurant with a menu full of traditional “casereccio” homemade Italian dishes, as well as other Italian-style appetizers, salads, and entrees made with locally sourced ingredients. Customers can expect multiple dining areas indoors and a spacious front al-fresco patio.

“Our upbringing in such family-oriented cultures will allow us to host our guests the same way mamma showed us, with love,” Mestre tells SanDiegoVille. “We will provide a small menu allowing us to focus on quality, comprised of daily made fresh pastas, local seafood, and organic appetizers, accompanied by our full bar will make for memorable outings. Our emphasis is on making our guests feel as comfortable hanging out with our family as we do having them over for a full belly, flavorful drinks, and a good time!”
