G’raj Mahal, the former Rainey St Indian restaurant, will debut a new location just east of UT-Austin sometime this year, according to Present Tense Hospitality. The restaurant’s new address will be at 2207 Alamo St, near Amy’s Ice Cream and Hoover’s.

“We’ll reopen by the end of the year,” Ben Runkle, president of Present Tense Hospitality told What Now Austin in a brief interview. No further detail was provided.

Eater reports that readers can “Expect newer items like brisket tikka masala (which makes sense given the Salt & Time connection), smoked tandoori chicken, and Frankies (Indian burritos made with roti). Plus there will be wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks. This new G’Raj will have indoor and outdoor dine-in services, as well as takeout capabilities.”

Originally established by Chef Sidney Roberts as a food truck in 2009, G’Raj evolved to a permanent Rainey Street restaurant location in 2014, operating there until 2021. Its return this year is sure to satiate deep longings for this unique fusion concept, restoring order to the Austin food landscape which has dearly missed it.
