Local pizza chain Famulari’s Pizzeria appears to be returning to a Publix-anchored Summerville shopping center where it closed earlier this year.
Post and Courier reported this week that Famulari’s Pizzeria leased 2,760 square feet in the Publix-anchored Market at Cane Bay Shopping Center, citing the restaurant’s broker representative.
That location is the same one where Famulari’s operated from 2015 until earlier this year. According to online reviews from July 2023, the restaurant closed abruptly and displayed signs indicated the closure was permanent. Shortly after, a new restaurant called Triple B BBQ began operating out of the space, although exterior signage for Famulari’s remained on display.
The reason for the pizzeria’s closure remains unclear, but it followed a string of poor reviews that appeared to be a departure from the pizzeria’s beloved reputation in the lowcountry. Famulari’s operates six other Charleston-area restaurants: Hanahan, James Island, Cainhoy, West Ashley and two others in Summerville. It has been awarded the Charleston Choice Award for Best Pizza 12 times since 2009.
Now, it appears that Famulari’s may be reclaiming the Cane Bay space and resuming business as usual, but it won’t be right away. Post and Courier’s source indicated that the restaurant would be open for business in spring 2024.
