The Scorpio, one of Charlotte’s favorite LGBTQIA+ nightclubs, is temporarily closing next month at 2301 Freedom Dr.
The company, which has been open since 1968, recently announced on social media that it will close its doors on November 1 to make way for a new planned development. There are no details regarding what will replace the iconic club. Despite the sad news, owners are searching for a new location, hoping to reopen sometime next year. When The Scorpio finds its new home, it will provide the LGBTQIA+ a safe space full of drag performances, DJs, live music, and more.
“This is not the end of The Scorpio, but merely a temporary pause in operations with a transition period,” According to the announcement. “We are actively seeking a new location and will share this news as soon as we secure our new home. Our aim is to reopen the doors in a fresh new space by mid-2024. Our gratitude knows no bounds. To our incredible guests, who have been the bedrock of our success, we extend our deepest thanks. Your patronage has nurtured relationships, weathered storms, and forged enduring friendships within the walls of 2301 Freedom Dr. We eagerly anticipate creating many more memories in our upcoming venue.”
The Scorpio has made a name for itself for being the area’s longest-running nightclubs that cater to the LGBTQIA+ community. Despite closing at the end of the month, the company continues to host events and help the community, such as by partnering with locals to donate socks to the homeless. On top of several events throughout the week, The Scorpio also offers a full bar with new specials weekly.
“As we bid adieu to 2301 Freedom Dr., we eagerly anticipate our next chapters of The Scorpio,” the announcement concludes. “We invite you all to stand with us as we embrace the future, perpetuate love and support for one another, and continue our fight for the community we hold dear.
