Taipei Express, a local Chinese restaurant with one location along Providence Road in Charlotte, has signed a lease to expand to the RedStone development in Indian Land.

The family-owned restaurant is now run by Anna Michaels, who has followed in the footsteps of her parents. The family has been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years, first opening a restaurant in northern Charlotte in the 1990s called House of Taipei University. They expanded to three other restaurants in the Charlotte area, but the family consolidated to one spot — the current Taipei Express — after Michaels’s father passed away.

“I’ve always been interested in running the family business, especially since my father created the sauces that we’re still using in the restaurant today,” Michaels said. “We decided to open up another location in Indian Land in hopes of continuing his legacy, and my mom’s too.”

The spot will be the second location for the brand, which first launched in 2001. The menu includes items like vegetable rolls, dumplings, lo mein, soups, fried rice, orange chicken and hot spiced pork. It also serves vegetarian options like eggplant in garlic sauce and sesame tofu.

Michaels said that the concept at RedStone will be the same as the current spot. It will serve as a quick-service Chinese takeout restaurant with the same menu. Michaels expects to open in early 2025.

The RedStone development by MPV Properties already includes tenants like Portofino’s, Viva Chicken, The Greek Grill, Super Chix and Margaritas Mexican Grill. Currently, the mixed-use development is entering its second phase of construction, which will eventually finish off the project across 51 acres. The second phase will bring additional square footage for both residential and retail tenants.

“We’re super excited to be able to serve the community over here,” Michaels said. “The other location on Providence Road has been open since 2001, and we’re proud to be able to stay open that long. So we’re excited to be able to branch out over here and serve this community.”
