A Mount Pleasant space will be trading tacos for burgers in 2024. Local media outlet PoPville reports that a new concept called Joia Burger is taking over the building vacated by Taqueria Nacional in September.

The restaurant, located at 3213 Mount Pleasant Street, NW, is currently under construction. While the windows are covered in brown paper, a sign containing the name and logo of Joia Burger has been placed in the window.

Once renovations are completed, the space will provide seating for up to 16 patrons at the countertop. Patio seating will be available for up to a dozen customers hoping to enjoy the local scenery.

Joia Burger is the latest concept from Purple Patch’s founder and chef, Patrice Cleary. The restaurant will focus on serving delicious and affordable smash burgers, French fries, and ube soft-serve. The burgers will likely offer customers the chance to select both expected, conventional burger toppings and a few Filipino options, such as atchara.

Cleary explained the inspiration behind her latest concept to The Washingtonian by stating “My big focus on this is making affordable burgers and meals for the neighborhood, and for kids. And really, that’s what’s driving me to do this.”

An official opening timelines is not yet available, however the signage indicates the project is moving along, with a probable early 2024 opening.
