A popular sweet chain is stepping in to fill the donut hole left by District Doughnut in a bustling DC neighborhood. The Salty, based in Miami but spreading quickly, will be opening a new location at the Wharf, reports the Washington Business Journal.

The brand, founded and operated by owners Andy Rodriguez and Amanda Pizarro, will be setting up shop at 5 Market Square SW. The Wharf storefront is one of two District Doughnuts locations The Salty is taking over; the other is located in Georgetown.

A precise opening timeline is not currently available, however The Salty plans to open its Wharf home this year, projecting a late 2025 debut.

Rodriguez explains that for he and Pizarro, who began the company as boyfriend and girlfriend and have ushered it to success as husband and wife, DC locations were always a matter of when and not if. He states: “We had toured D.C. probably two years ago, and I’ve spent time in D.C. myself, for both business and pleasure, and it’s a pretty amazing culinary city.”

Founded in 2014, The Salty has established itself as a powerful force in the donut market, emphasizing a welcoming environment alongside delicious baked goods. The company website explains what makes the concept so special, saying: “At ‘The Salty’, we believe in the transformative power of a really freakin’ good donut, baked goods and a perfectly crafted coffee. We strive to tell stories through our ever-changing menus of new flavors and weave ourselves into the fabric of the neighborhoods we’re in to create spaces for the community to gather and positively impact those around us. Simply put, we like to make people feel good.”
