In addition to our normal news coverage, What Now Atlanta (WNA) is tracking ways Atlanta’s businesses are adapting to the novel coronavirus and the challenges it brings to brick-and-mortars.
At least seven Georgia JCPenney stores, including one in Atlanta, will close as part of the department store’s bankruptcy filing.
JCPenney could close a total of 242 stores, the company said, and the first round, unveiled Thursday, only accounts for 154 of those.
Following a June 11 hearing for the bankruptcy could be a going-out-of-business sale at the closing locations.
“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” Jill Soltau, the CEO of JCPenney, said in a statement.
