A longstanding bakery in Brookline is looking to expand to Somerville.

Kupel’s Bakery is in the process of securing a second location at 54A Elm St, according to a report from Universal Hub. A flyer for a recent neighborhood meeting held to discuss the proposal notes that the new space would operate as a “bakery, café, and coffee shop.”

Founded in 1978 by Allan and Diane Kupelnick, Kupel’s has long drawn crowds with its wide variety of bagels, spreads, and sandwiches, plus pastries and breads like bear claws, braided challah, and coffee rolls.

In 2007, after nearly 30 years at the helm, the Kupelnicks passed the bakery to longtime employee Farzad Ghorbi and his wife, Julia, who continue to run it today.

The Ghorbis could not be reached for comment, so stay tuned for updates as Kupel’s Bakery plans its Somerville debut.
