A new non-kosher restaurant will be taking the place of a kosher restaurant that was closed down last month. The team at the old Genesis Steakhouse and Wine Bar is set to open a new restaurant at the same spot, which will be called Exodus Bar and Grill.
Highlights
- After the Kosher restaurant Genesis Steakhouse & Wine Bar was closed down last month, a new non-kosher restaurant will take its place.
- Exodus Bar and Grill is being presented by the same team that was behind Genesis.
- The announcement of the new restaurant’s opening is expected soon.
New Beginnings With Exodus Bar and Grill
Exodus Bar and Grill is expected to open soon in the space that previously housed Genesis, at 80 Braeswood Square, in the Meyerland area of Houston. The new restaurant already has official social media handles on which it introduced itself. The space and the menu will be revamped so that there is a break from the past and a feeling of newness.
The Instagram handle shared a rendering of what the new space would look like. The design of the space will have “a whole lot of Texas pride, heart, and even more flavor,” the post caption reads.
“Exodus was born from resilience and built for community,” the post that introduced the restaurant on the Instagram handle said, marking a “new era of dining in Houston.” Every dish at the restaurant will have a story and flavor, freedom, and fire come together, it said.
More updates and announcements are expected in due course. The grand opening announcement is expected within a few weeks as the space undergoes remodeling.
What to Expect At Exodus?
Exodus will open as a non-Kosher restaurant and is expected to offer an experience that is reminiscent of but at the same time different from, Genesis.
Since the restaurant will no longer adhere to kosher dietary laws, the menu is expected to expand to include a wider variety of ingredients and dishes. Dishes that use and are centered around non-kosher items like pork, shellfish, and mixed meat and dairy can be expected.
Diners will still be able to have some of the dishes that used to be served at Genesis. While not kosher-certified, the restaurant plans to offer kosher-style dishes upon request, available for an additional charge.
Finally, all Kosher places are required to remain closed on Friday nights and Saturday – that will not be the case when Exodus opens.
What Happened to Genesis?
Jason Goldstein, the owner of Genesis Steakhouse and Wine Bar, was forced to announce the closure of the restaurant on April 17. The restaurant had to be shuttered after its Kosher certification was revoked by the Houston Kashruth Association (HKA). It had its last service on April 30 and bid adieu to the community that it served for over 12 years.
“In light of the recent unanticipated events, the situation has ultimately forced us to make this very difficult decision—one that many of you are already aware of. We had hoped for a quicker resolution, but at this time, closing our doors is the unfortunate path we must take,” the Facebook post that announced the closure said.
After a few difficult months, the team at the old Genesis will be back to serve the community with more expansive offerings in a new setting and under a new name. Exodus Bar and Grill will open soon and will mark the beginning of a new chapter for Goldstein and his team.
