Founder Announces Closure of Jekyll Brewing
Since news broke that the brewery halted keg production back in February, speculation has been spreading that it may be counting its final days. As it turns out, they were not speculations but were predictions, as the brewery is closing down for good in a few days.
Jekyll Brewing was founded by Michael Lundmark in partnership with Brewmaster Josh Rachel in 2013. The brewery opened its first location, called the Marconi Taproom, in Alpharetta, Metro Atlanta, in August that year. Its name was derived from Jekyll Island, where Major William Horton started Georgia’s first brewery about 300 years ago.
A 12-year Journey Comes to An End
Six years after its debut, Jekyll Brewing started expansion. It opened a second location that was much larger than the original one at the Alpharetta City Center on Academy Street in Downtown Alpharetta in 2018. The 6,500 square foot space included a taproom with 14 taps, a restaurant, and a rooftop patio. This location increased the brewery’s production capacity significantly.
In the following years, Jekyll Brewing opened its first location outside Georgia at Jacksonville Beach in Florida. The Brewery also opened two other locations in Georgia, one spanning two levels at Woodstock in 2022 and its latest location at Gainesville.
As Lundmark announces the closing of Jekyll Brewing, it will soon be the latest addition to the rather worrisome list of Georgia breweries that have closed down recently. Breweries have been closing down throughout the last year and since the beginning of this year. If the trend continues, as is expected, more closures will be announced in the coming months.
