Grant Park is getting a new tutoring center.
A new location of Mathnasium is planned for 519 Memorial Drive SE at the Larkin on Memorial development.
Mathnasium offers customized learning plans for a variety of students, from those who excel at math and want an extra challenge, to those who are struggling and need to get caught up. The centers provide test prep, personalized homework help and other programs for K-12 students. Founded in Los Angeles in 2002, there are now more than 1,100 Mathnasium locations worldwide.
“We work with kids already doing great at math, as well as kids that are behind and getting caught up,” said local operator Sam Younis.
This will be the third Atlanta-area location of Mathnasium for Younis, who also operates the Decatur and Morningside centers. And this isn’t his first experience with the company; he opened a Mathnasium in Los Angeles when he previously resided on the West Coast.
“Working as an actor and writer in Los Angeles, I used to do tutoring on the side and got a lot of fulfillment from it,” he told What Now Atlanta. “I wanted to see where that would lead.”
Younis has seen firsthand how excelling at the subject can provide a lot of of benefits for kids and teens.
“Math came easier to me as a young person and that helped give me a lot of confidence,” he said. “And the inverse is true. When kids don’t feel confident in math, it can bleed into other domains of their self image. They’re not bad at math, it just hasn’t been presented in a way that clicks with them. They don’t hate math; they just hate feeling intimidated by math.”
The tutoring center in Grant Park will be next to a new location of Bomb Biscuit, when the breakfast restaurant moves to Grant Park this summer. Mathnasium is going into the space previously occupied by the clothing store Squash Blossom Boutique.
Younis is looking forward to opening a Mathnasium in a new neighborhood to serve even more families and be a convenient place for kids to get educational support.
“Some kids come two to three times a week for an hour-long visit,” he said. “It behooves parents to go to a center closer to where they live, especially with Atlanta picking up and becoming a busier place. We were finding that families would rather do that if they’re going to make that consistent commitment.”
They hope to be open around Labor Day 2025.
