A new spot for Jalisco-style Mexican cuisine is making its way to the Natomas Marketplace.

El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant is opening its third Sacramento-area location at 3521 Truxel Rd in Natomas, reports the Sacramento Business Journal. The long-vacant space—formerly home to On The Border, which closed in 2020—is getting a light refresh.

The City of Sacramento recently approved plans to remodel the building, including enclosing the 966-square-foot patio with new windows, floors, and an HVAC system. Inside, the dining room will receive some minor updates, including new paint, lighting, and furniture.

El Tapatio is known for its traditional Mexican fare with a distinct Jalisco influence. The menu features comforting favorites like chicken taquitos, albondigas soup, carnitas burritos, and Jalisco-style arroz con pollo. Diners can also indulge in a taco bar and brunch on Sundays.

The chain was founded in Oregon in 1980 by Efren Guitron, who shares the Natomas location’s license with Estela Alcazar. In 2013, the pair brought the brand to California, where they currently operate two locations in Citrus Heights and Auburn, along with three in Oregon.

Once it debuts, El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant will join a plethora of eateries at the Walmart-anchored Natomas Marketplace, including Applebee’s Grill + Bar, Del Taco, In-N-Out Burger, Deluna Dessert Cafe, Mr. Crab, and Subway.
