According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the mochi doughnut-focused concept Modo Hawaii is gearing up to open an outpost in San Francisco’s Sunset District.
Coming to 1353 Taraval Street — taking over a spot that was formerly home to the Japanese curry restaurant Go Go Kare — Modo Hawaii will land near establishments such as the coffeeshop El Cafe, Golden Boy Pizza, and the sandwich shop Lou’s Cafe.
What Now San Francisco reached out to the concept’s co-owner, Daniel Furumura, to learn more about the expansion; however, he could not provide additional information before publication.
For readers who are unfamiliar with the company’s history, MoDo Hawaii was founded by Kenny Chen, Furumura, and David Mao in July 2017 in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2020, it operated as a pop-up concept in San Jose, and in 2022, it opened its first brick-and-mortar spot in Santa Clara. According to KRON, the business previously held outposts in Torrance, Irvine, Duarte, Fountain Valley, and Honolulu; however, these shops shuttered during the pandemic.
On the menu are mochi doughnuts — a dessert that fuses American-style doughnuts and Japanese mochi, often made with tapioca flour — in flavors such a black sesame, green tea, and ube, as well as poke bowls and coffee and matcha-based beverages.
