Basket Case Cafe and Grocer is targeting an opening in late fall at 1801 5th Ave. N, according to its Instagram page. Owner Gabby Raven is looking to bring a hyper-localized feel to the forthcoming brand, according to the website.
“I wanted a name that didn’t take itself too seriously — something a little playful, approachable, and easy to remember. Opening a very localized restaurant has been my dream for years, and like most dreams worth chasing, it comes with its fair share of chaos. Everything from produce to problems ends up in the basket. ‘Basket Case’ felt like the perfect way to embrace all of that,” the website states.
Serving a dual-purpose as both a cafe and a grocery store, Basket Case will offer a limited, globally-inspired menu using fresh, seasonal, local ingredients. Raven and her team are looking to keep the menu small so they can focus on quality over quantity. Expect to see health-focused options like salads, sandwiches, grain bowls and pastries. The menu will change frequently, introducing new meals to try. There will also be rotisserie chicken and grab-and-go meals available for purchase.
The grocery section of the store will offer fresh produce, locally-sourced eggs and dairy, meats, pasta, rice, beans, cooking oils, spices, and other staples. There will also be a wine shop.
“At Baskey Case, we’re here to nourish more than appetites, we’re here to nourish the community,” a mission statement on their Instagram page states. “Part corner store, part cafe, we bring everyday cooking essentials and local gems together under one roof, always with a dash of fun and a whole lot of heart.”
The team is targeting an October or November opening, according to an Instagram update this summer.
