Zonkey Paletas is set to take over the former Lucha Libre Taco Shop location at 3016 University Avenue in North Park.

The team behind the popular taco chain plans to reopen Zonkey as a standalone dessert and beverage spot in mid-to-late September 2025, according to co-owner Diego Rojano-Garcia. Zonkey first launched in 2022 as a dessert concept inside the North Park Lucha Libre location. It was created by the Rojano-Garcia family, who also founded Lucha Libre Taco Shop, a well-known San Diego brand with a location in Mission Hills. The move to a dedicated space reflects Zonkey’s growing popularity and the team’s desire to expand the concept.

The shop specializes in Mexican-style paletas, otherwise known as handcrafted frozen popsicles, with more than 20 flavor options, including dairy, vegan, and boozy varieties. Some of the creative flavors include pineapple with chamoy, banana with nutmeg and cajeta, and blends inspired by classic cocktails. Aguas frescas made with reverse osmosis filtered water are also a core offering, featuring unique combinations like watermelon with yerba mate and passionfruit. Fizzy chamoy-rimmed coolers served with sparkling water or beer round out the menu.

Zonkey collaborated with award-winning bartender Andrew “Coco” Cordero to develop its lineup of cocktail-inspired frozen treats and boozy paletas. Customers can also rent custom paleta carts for events such as weddings, birthdays, and parties, with multiple size options available. While the North Park Lucha Libre location has closed, the brand continues to thrive in other spots around the city. The team plans to further grow Zonkey both as a standalone business and by incorporating its products into future Lucha Libre locations.
