Last month, What Now Sacramento reported that the owners of Midtown’s Cantina Alley were working on a new concept in Historic Folsom. Now, it turns out the duo has even more on their plate.
According to the Sacramento Business Journal, Art Aguilar and Max Archuleta are transforming the Victorian house behind their cantina at 2320 Jazz Alley—near the corner of K and 24th streets—into not one, but two new Midtown Sacramento experiences.
Downstairs, the pair will launch Abuela’s, a Mexican brunch concept inspired by the food they grew up eating in their grandmothers’ kitchens. Patrons can look forward to chilaquiles and huevos rancheros, plus brunch cocktails like mimosas, crafted under the guidance of Cantina Alley’s beverage program lead.
Abuela’s will make use of Cantina Alley’s kitchen but run on its own early morning through early afternoon schedule while the bar takes a break. The snug space holds about 20 guests, with patio seating planned for spillover.
The restaurant is on track to open within the next three weeks, with pop-ups scheduled in the meantime. Hours aren’t finalized yet, but the team is eyeing a Tuesday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. schedule.
Upstairs, the vibe shifts darker. Aguilar and Archuleta are also working on an unnamed speakeasy, slated to debut this fall. Details are still under wraps, but the secret spot will bring a new nightlife option to Jazz Alley.
Meanwhile, the previously reported Historic Folsom project is still moving forward. While it won’t be a carbon copy of Cantina Alley, the owners say it will capture a similar spirit, shaped to suit the Folsom crowd. They hope to open that location before the end of the year.
