A diner is making a comeback in Olympia.
Black Bear Diner will take over the former Shari’s Cafe and Pie at 3425 Pacific Ave. SE. The location already features signage and bear statues outside, The Olympian reported.
The diner has applied for a liquor license with the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis board, according to business filings.
Black Bear Diner serves all-day American comfort food.
Breakfast favorites include pancakes, chicken-fried steak and eggs and omelets, all served in generous portions. Lunch and dinner offerings include burgers, sandwiches, pot roast, tri-tip and prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays. Desserts feature pies, milkshakes and cobblers. A Cubs menu provides smaller portions for children. The diner emphasizes familiar, satisfying meals in a casual, family-friendly setting.
Black Bear Diner was founded in 1995 by Bruce Dean and Bob and Laurie Manley in Mount Shasta, California. The founders envisioned a cozy, family-friendly restaurant combining hearty comfort food with a rustic, bear-themed atmosphere. They aimed to create a gathering place where guests could enjoy home-cooked, “bear-sized,” meals in a setting reflecting small-town values, according to the restaurant’s website.
As of 2025, Black Bear Diner operates 166 locations across 14 states, with plans for continued expansion.
While an exact opening date for the Olympia location has not been announced, it is listed under the “Coming Soon” section on the website.
What Now Seattle reached out to the Black Bear Diner team, however, they have not yet responded. This article may be updated.
