The team behind Square Roots Collective is set to open a new restaurant and cocktail bar this summer, marking its latest move in the local dining scene.

Opus will open in the former Hank’s Place at 201 Birch St. in the Kennett Square neighborhood of Chester County.

“We’re very excited about Opus,” Michael DePaolo, director of hospitality, told What Now Philadelphia.

The new venue will occupy 3,600 square feet across two floors. The second level will house a cocktail bar, doubling as a breakfast spot during the day for hotel guests and the public. Outdoor terraces on each floor provide additional seating, Philadelphia Business Journal reported.

Founded in 2019, Square Roots Collective develops local businesses and backs nonprofit initiatives, aiming to bring regional communities together so everyone can participate and thrive, according to the website.

“Each business and non-profit initiative focuses on an area that’s vital to community thriving so we can work toward igniting meaningful improvements in Southern Chester County. We don’t build a business, create public programming, operate a non-profit, or donate to one unless it impacts the systems—like housing, transportation, economic opportunity, or education—that shape everyday life, so more people can thrive in the place they call home,” the website reads.

Their projects include The Creamery in Kennett Square, a repurposed century-old building transformed into a community center, beer garden, and art hub, now expanding with an event space and more food offerings. They also developed The Artelo, a 14-room local motel reimagined as an artistic hotel featuring murals by regional artists.

The work doesn’t stop with Opus. Square Roots Collective is also developing Star & Lantern, a speakeasy honoring African-American stories through food and drink, and The Francis Hotel & Suites.

Opus has not announced an official opening date, but visit the group’s website and follow along on Instagram and Facebook.
