Las Vegas is famous for its flashy casinos, extravagant shows, and over-the-top buffets. But there’s a place where neon lights are replaced by handshakes and friendly faces. Am old-school restaurant where your coffee is hot and rich and smiles are given at no extra charge.
Sunset Grill, located at 6870 S. Fort Apache Road, may have just recently opened in Las Vegas, but already the breakfast and lunch spot has been getting rave reviews for both its food and its hospitality. It could be the restaurant’s Canadian roots — or it could be Las Vegas owner/operator Kevin Khandan’s commitment to quality and service.
Khandan, tells What Now Las Vegas he takes the “hospitality” in the hospitality industry seriously. “My customers come in and spend their hard earned dollars at my restaurant. I owe it to them to give them the best experience possible. It makes me feel good when I see a smile on their faces and a belly full of my good food.” Khandan, who tries to introduce himself to as many guests as he can, says Sunset Grill has two goals: to serve the best food possible and to be a part of the community it serves.
Though new to Las Vegas, Sunset Grill has long been a favorite in Canada. The restaurant was founded in 1985 in Toronto by Angelo Christou. It quickly became a favorite for its fresh meals and friendly service. Now, it’s expanding into the U.S. Says Khandan, “This is the first Sunset Grill outside of Canada, but it’s the first of many.”
Sunset Grill is more than a place to get a delicious meal. The restaurant cooks everything to order on flat tops instead of deep frying. Beef tallow is used instead of seed oils and margarine, and only the freshest ingredients are used. “Our slogan is, fresh is tastiest,” says Khandan. The restaurant is also one of the few that serves real Canadian bacon, and its own version of poutine — made with hollandaise instead of gravy.
If you live in Las Vegas, Khandan would like you to stop in, convinced you’ll become a regular. And if you’re visiting, maybe take a break from the bright lights to slow down and experience the real Las Vegas over a stack of fluffy buttermilk pancakes. Handshakes and smiles included.
