A Sumo Sushi and Grill, is headed to Portland, according to a liquor license application. Sumo is opening on 9730 N Whitaker Rd. on Hayden Island, occupying a freestanding building that held a Shari’s Cafe and Pies.
Sumo Sushi is a chain of AYCE sushi spots, mostly concentrated in Washington with an outpost in Oregon City. The restaurants are owned by Maobin Chi, who also goes by Jackie. Chi also owns a collection of adjacent Sumo restaurants, such as Sumo Steakhouse and Sushi in Moses Lake.
As an AYCE sushi place, attempting to list the things you can order at Sumo is a Sisyphean task, but one must imagine a restaurant reporter happy. Sumo offers its buffets in silver or gold tiers. Silver is cheaper, but has some limits on the dishes you can order. The Gold-tier dinner gives diners free rein of the menu, including sushi, hand rolls, teppanyaki and entrees. Meals are limited to 90 minutes.
Sumo will be open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on most nights. The restaurant does not have an opening date as of yet. What Now Portland has reached out to Chi for more information.
