Last winter, Canada-based Descendant Detroit Style Pizza opened its first U.S. location in Boston’s Prudential Center, drawing fans with its signature Detroit-style pies. Now, the pizzeria has closed as it prepares for a move to the coast.

Descendant is relocating to a new Revere Beach location, according to Boston Restaurant Talk. Owner and Boston native Ike Tzakis confirmed the news with What Now Boston, revealing that the pizzeria will take over the former Santorini space at 376 Revere Beach Blvd. Santorini, a longtime Greek-inspired restaurant, shuttered earlier this year after roughly 30 years in business.

Founded in 2015 by Chef Chris Getchell, Descendant is widely recognized as Toronto’s first Detroit-style pizzeria. Its hallmark “upside-down” pies layer cheese directly onto the dough, with sauce spooned on top and stretched to the edges, creating caramelized corners and crisp, airy squares.

Each pie begins with dough that undergoes a precise 48-hour cold fermentation, with temperatures carefully monitored at every stage to ensure ideal texture and flavor. At the Prudential Center location, pizzas were offered in personal 6×6-inch and 8×10-inch formats.

The menu spans classics like cheese and pepperoni alongside more inventive combinations such as the Truff Guy, a rich, savory pie topped with double-smoked bacon, caramelized onions, cremini mushrooms, truffle aioli, Grana Padano, and fresh thyme.

In addition to the signature pies, the new location will broaden its offerings. Tzakis said the expanded menu will better suit the beachside setting, adding seafood, sandwiches, and other coastal-friendly fare alongside the Detroit-style staples. The roughly 2,500-square-foot space will also feature a seaside patio and dedicated parking.

Construction is currently underway, with an opening targeted for May 2026, pending permitting and buildout progress. “We’re excited about the opportunity to join the beach community,” said Tzakis.
