Del Popolo is a renowned pizzeria in San Francisco, known for its wood-fired pizzas. The restaurant has announced that it will close its doors later this spring. The owner plans to expand the brand’s frozen pizza offerings.

Del Popolo Pizzeria in Lower Nob Hill Announces Closing Date

Del Popolo announced that the restaurant will close on May 8, 2026. Located at 855 Bush St, San Francisco, Del Popolo is known for its authenticity, methods, and quality. Owner Jon Darsky mentioned in the closure post that, “Months of reflection haven’t lessened my ambivalence, but ultimately it feels like the right decision and the right path.”

The restaurant started its journey in 2012, baking Neapolitan-style pies in a truck before opening a brick-and-mortar location. For the last ten years, the restaurant has operated near Union Square, attracting patrons for its wood-fired pizzas and Italian-themed menu.

Del Popolo’s menu centers on fermented dough and classic baking techniques. The restaurant has also earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand designation, which identifies restaurants that serve quality food at reasonable prices.

The pizzeria has built a reputation for traditional pizza-making techniques and premium ingredients. The owner thanked the team, colleagues, guests, and neighborhood community for valuing and embracing the concept.

As Del Popolo prepares to close, Darsky is looking ahead to the brand’s next chapter. Del Popolo pizzas are already available in the freezer section of local grocery stores. The frozen pizza line allows the brand to reach customers beyond the restaurant.

Darsky will shift his focus to the brand’s frozen sourdough pizza line. He is determined to change the way people perceive frozen pizza and offer the same quality as served in their food truck and restaurant.

Del Popolo has established a devoted fan base in the San Francisco food scene. The closure announcement received mixed reactions from customers. One of the users wrote, “Jon, we’ll miss Del Popolo on Bush St dearly! We had your pizza truck at our wedding welcome dinner & have loved your pizza for so many years.”

Some patrons also mentioned that they are glad that Del Popolo is continuing on with the frozen pizzas. The coming weeks are a last chance for the community to experience the restaurant’s hospitality before it closes its doors.
