Juniper Café is preparing to expand beyond San Francisco with a second bakery in San Mateo, California. The business plans to open at 1 North B St. inside The Brickline, a mixed-use development in downtown San Mateo, in early 2027.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the new location will give the bakery additional room for pastry production and allow it to introduce a selection of breads that are not currently available at its original shop.
Juniper operates its first location at 1401 Polk St. in San Francisco. The bakery opened in 2023 and has become known for its croissants and other laminated pastries. Its current space has a two-story layout, with a basement kitchen and limited room for baking equipment. The San Mateo location will occupy a larger, single-floor space with a more open layout.
Partner and baker Amy Chen told the Chronicle that the expansion will allow the team to introduce baguettes and naturally leavened sourdough bread. The selection may also include loaves with ingredients such as pink peppercorn and cheese, olives, lemon and garlic, drawing from recipes Chen previously developed for a bread pop-up during the pandemic.
The bakery plans to use imported French flour and follow a same-day preparation and baking process for its baguettes. Chen also intends to bake them several times throughout the day, allowing customers to purchase fresh bread at different times rather than relying on a single morning batch.
The new location will also support the production of Juniper’s existing pastries, including its croissants. According to the Chronicle, the breads made in San Mateo will also be available at the original San Francisco bakery.
Juniper was co-founded by the team behind Saint Frank Coffee. Chen joined the bakery shortly after its 2023 opening and has since become a partner.
