Amazon is closing its Lancaster facility as part of a broader effort to streamline operations. The closure will affect more than 542 employees working at the facility.

Amazon to Close a Location

Amazon is adopting a new strategy to simplify its structure, which is leading to layoffs. According to The Country Herald, the layoffs mark one of the region’s largest recent workforce reductions.

The WARN notice filed with New York State shows that Amazon will close its sortation center at 4201 Walden Avenue on May 30, 2026. The facility currently serves as a key node in Amazon’s regional logistics network. The closure is expected to impact not only Lancaster but also surrounding communities.

Why Amazon Is Closing the Facility

The shutdown is tied to Amazon’s efforts to restructure and efficiency shifts. Similar closures nationwide have been tied to the same issue as the company adjusts to changing demands. The changes are intended to streamline operations and improve efficiency. The decision is also tied to the facility’s operational performance.

According to a February 25, 2026, report by Buffalo News, Amazon is closing just a portion of one of its facilities in Lancaster, while the rest will remain open and functional.

A separate report from WIVB.com notes the site will transition to a return center after its sortation operations shut down in May 2026.

Amazon is encouraging employees to find another role in its network before the closure. It is also putting in effort to move the employees to more active sortation centers. Employees who choose not to transfer will be eligible for severance.

The Company’s Broader Plan

Earlier this year, Amazon announced it was cutting about 16,000 corporate jobs. The move aims to focus on key areas such as AI and new technologies. The cuts also reflect overexpansion during the pandemic-era hiring surge.

The move is intended to reduce costs while refocusing on growth areas such as AI and emerging technologies. It will help the company keep up with market demands and provide better services.

The closure reflects the company’s commitment to adapting to shifting business needs.
