Two Sacramento Eateries Cited for Multiple Violations During Recent Health Inspection

Alaro Craft Brewery and Curiosity Cafe received a yellow placard for improper storage of food and other health code violations.

A routine health inspection was conducted at two Sacramento restaurants on April 7. Alaro Craft Brewery and Curiosity Cafe received a yellow placard and were flagged for cleanliness issues and other health code violations.

Alaro Craft Brewery

  • Where: 2004 Capitol Ave, Sacramento, CA 95811

An upscale gastropub, Alaro Craft Brewery in Midtown Sacramento, is known for serving Spanish-inspired tapas paired with classic pub dishes. According to the inspection report, the violations included:

  • The report noted food stored at improper holding temperatures. Food items like sliced cheddar cheese and cooked pork were kept at 56°F, above the safe cold-holding limit.
  • Raw beef, raw shrimp, and sliced tomatoes were stored at 45°F-47°F instead of the required 41°.

  • Lack of shellfish tags for a container of clams. The tag required to verify the source and safety of seafood was missing.
  • The report noted employees stored personal beverages above food items inside the refrigerators.
  • A black mold-like substance was observed above the three-compartment sink. Tongs were stored on oven handles.

Curiosity Cafe

  • When: April 7, 2026
  • Where: 400 Jibboom St, Sacramento, CA 95811

The innovative Curiosity Café in Sacramento is a complete electric café. According to the report, the violations were:

  • The report observed a lack of paper towels at the handwashing sink near the register.
  • The inspection report mentioned Pizza kept in a hot holding unit was measured at 116°F instead of 135°F.
  • An employee kept a personal uncovered beverage above a cutting board, risking food contamination, according to the report.

  • Food items stored in bulk in dry storage were improperly labeled. A build-up of ice inside the chest freezer was noted during the inspection.
  • Sanitizer test strips to check the strength of sanitizer for cleaning solutions were not available.
  • Thermometers to monitor the food storage temperatures were missing for two refrigerators.
  • The report also mentioned that the required air gap near the drainage line from the coffee machine was not present.

Follow-Up Inspection

Following the routine health inspections, both restaurants received a yellow placard. The restaurants are required to correct all the violations before reinspection. A follow-up inspection will be conducted within 24-72 hours.
