Apple has announced plans to lay off 78 employees at its Towson Town Center store. The company will permanently close the store, with layoffs scheduled for June. Apple is closing the location as part of a broader move affecting three stores nationwide as it reviews its retail portfolio.

Apple Will Permanently Close Towson Store

Apple Inc. filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with the state of Maryland on April 23. The company will close its store at 825 Dulaney Valley Road, Towson, Maryland.

The layoffs are scheduled to take effect on June 24. The Towson Town Center store is significant for the company as it was the first unionized Apple store in the U.S.

According to MacRumors, the move reflects shifts in the retail landscape and declining in-person foot traffic. Online access has affected the brick-and-mortar stores.

MacRumors cited that two more stores, Apple Trumbull in Trumbull and Apple North County in Escondido, are slated for closure in June. All three stores are located in shopping malls that have faced challenges as major retailers continue to close locations.

In a statement to MacRumors, Apple said employees at affected locations may continue their roles at nearby stores. However, complete details about employee support have not been provided in the filing yet.

About the US Tech Giant

Apple Inc., established in 1976, is a global technology firm best known for its iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch products. It has a vast retail strategy to offer online and in-person experiences, support, and sales.

Apple retail stores have traditionally been seen as a pivotal part of its branding, focusing on design, service, and education. However, the company has been evolving its retail strategy to keep pace with changing consumer preferences, such as the growth of e-commerce and the changing face of physical retail.

Apple has recently announced a leadership change. The company has announced that its CEO of 14 years, Tim Cook, will become executive chairman, and John Ternus, the senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will become CEO, effective September 2026.

This transition has been in the works for some time, and Cook will remain on board in an advisory and policy role.

The company has also made progress in its sustainability targets, including achieving its highest-ever use of recycled materials across products. It is part of its efforts to become carbon neutral and adopt more sustainable manufacturing processes.

The closures also reflect difficulties facing mall retailing. The closures also highlight job losses and how major companies are adapting to changing retail trends.
