Orange County Dessert Shop Suggested to Close Following Cockroach Activity During Inspection

Meet Fresh was flagged for cockroach infestation and improper storage of utensils.

A routine health inspection was conducted at Meet Fresh on April 27 by the Orange County Health Department. During the inspection, the restaurant was cited for multiple health and safety code violations. The violations included cockroach infestation, lack of adequate handwashing supplies, and inoperable equipment.

Where: 2710 Alton Pkwy #105, Irvine, CA 92606, United States

Meet Fresh is a global Taiwanese dessert chain that serves traditional Taiwanese sweet treats. According to the inspection report, the following violations were noted:

  • The handwashing sink in the front service area had no liquid hand soap. The staff was advised to provide liquid hand soap and maintain the handwashing area properly.
  • The report found several live and dead cockroaches in multiple areas of the facility. Dead cockroaches were present under the reach-in cooler, in front of the service area dump sink, and behind the upright 2-door cooler in the kitchen.
  • More dead cockroaches were also noted on the floor next to the front door near the restrooms, and under the front handwashing sink.
  • The restaurant staff was advised to address the cockroach infestation using approved methods. The facility must be thoroughly cleaned, sanitized, and all gaps sealed.
  • Small fly activity was also present in the facility during the inspection. The staff was instructed to eliminate the insect activity with appropriate pest control methods.
  • Uncovered pots of tea were stored in an ice bin under a kitchen sink paper towel dispenser. Staff were instructed to cover the tea to prevent possible contamination.
  • Accumulated grime was noted in several areas, including inside the cabinet under the front service area dump sink.
  • Sanitizer test strips were not available during the inspection. The facility was advised to keep testing equipment available at all times, according to the report.
  • The rear prep sink was detached from the walls; staff were instructed to properly reinstall the sink and seal all gaps.

  • The inoperable two-door reach-in cooler near the ice machine has torn gaskets. The gaskets are required to be replaced.
  • The facility was using milk crates for storage under the front service area dump sink. The staff was told to use approved and cleanable storage containers instead.
  • A pot was kept in the rear kitchen sink. The report advised the staff to keep the handwashing sink area clear and store dishes like pots in approved areas.
  • A broken ventilation system in the employees’ and customers’ restroom was noted. The restaurant must repair or replace the ventilation system.
  • Multi-use wiping cloths were stored outside of the sanitizer solution in the front service area and kitchen. Wiping cloths must be stored in an approved sanitizer solution between uses.
  • A leak under the rear handwashing sink was found during the inspection. The restaurant was advised to repair the leak.
  • A drainpipe of the insulated ice bin was extended far into the floor sink. A proper air gap between the drainpipe and the floor sink must be maintained.
  • The toilet in the employee restroom was missing its tank lid and had an inoperable flush handle. The facility was instructed to repair the toilet.
  • Large gaps (bigger than ¼ inch) were noted in multiple areas, including the rear door weather strip, under the rear prep table, and on the wall outlet cover at the 3-compartment sink.
  • Grime buildup was also noted under dry storage shelves in the rear of the kitchen, under the ice machine, and under upright coolers in the kitchen.
  • The report found broken tiles and missing grout in the flooring of the front service area and in the rear kitchen and storage area.
  • Deteriorating flooring was also noted in the base cove or wall below the reach-in cooler near the register.

Follow-up Inspection

The eatery’s health permit was immediately suspended, and the restaurant was ordered to close. A follow-up inspection will be conducted to verify compliance.

The restaurant must correct all the violations and eliminate the cockroach infestation before reinspection.
